To practice black magic you have to violate every principle of science, decency, and intelligence. You must be obsessed with an insane idea of the importance of the petty object of your wretched and selfish desires.
I have been accused of being a "black magician." No more foolish statement was ever made about me. I despise the thing to such an extent that I can hardly believe in the existence of people so debased and idiotic as to practice it.

If 1% of voters write in “Aleister Crowley,” then his message of Liberty will be heard around the world, as amazed media report a groundswell of support for someone they thought was not only dead and British, but still the wickedest man in the world.

Even if you don’t live in the U.S., or if you don’t actually plan to write in Crowley, that is no reason not to promote this campaign! At the very least, it is a great conversation starter, and in any case you will be helping to spread Crowley’s fundamental message of freedom, and his declaration of the sovereignty of the individual.

I was up in Inverness and the Loch Ness area several days ago, and, although I had no plans of visiting Uncle Al’s briefly-inhabited abode during the time he spent in Scotland (I can only imagine how dismaying it must be for the current owners/caretakers of the house to deal with ‘fans’ and curiosity seekers prowling around the grounds all the time - I mean, people live there, and after all it was only AC's short-term residence), I was nonetheless curious enough to look up the location of the house, relishing the idea of my proximity and hoping to find some photos and the like. Perhaps the true message is simply conveyed. Much has written on Crowley's notorious treatment of his many students and followers. He traveled and lived in The U.S. and Canada during the years 1915-1919. Apparently his presence in the States was profound; upon his death in 1947, his ashes were sent to followers in America. The timeframe fits; Crowley was born in 1875, and Lily in 1880. As far-fetched as it seems, I believe there is a good possibility that Lily could have known and been closely associated enough with Crowley to have had enough of an impact on her life, as to be immortalized on her tombstone. I am now focusing my attention on the Crowley theory in the investigation, and hope to uncover evidence of their affiliation soon.

...so one day a few years ago, I was practicing seeing if I could tune in to certain different energies. I thought it would be fun to check into a fan of mine. Old Al. Since I knew he was very different then me, it would be helpful to know if I could really do this (channeling if you will...) because his energy would stand out.

So I sat down with my coffee on the deck that morning and meditated about 15 minutes. and then I asked, and bingo. I had a fascinating visit with him. I was blown away. funny as hell in a very dry way, sarcastic --for lack of a better word and of course, smart as hell. When I came out of it I was laughing.

I asked for a little sign for confirmation but feeling very sure. I went in for coffee refill. when I came out and stood in the sun on the edge of the deck I was startled to see that there was a young bird, flapping away and dying slowly. It was being stung by what seemed like hundreds of bees (or wasps or something) it was covered with them everywhere! I was horrified, and shocked since I had never seen anything like that. Then I remembered I had asked for confirmation. So that made me laugh again --so Al, right, no issues with death, bring up the dark side to get to the light...

So I had to know, what the meaning was. I sat back into meditation and tuned right in again. What came up was that the bird represented freedom. The hive --they represented family. The bird had lost it's flight the hive was killing it. I love that now, it was so right. At the time I blew it off and laughed it away, silly Al --talking about general people, oh he's right I thought... but not about me...lol
Poor little bird was reborn though... :)

Sometimes I think that I can not become more *fascinated* & impressed with this man & then he manages to top me again!

I searched, but to no avail, through the topics posted on this tribe searching for a discussion about the CD release in 2000 titled ALEISTER CROWLEY which came in two versions. (I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed and I just overlooked it in the posts-list.)

version 1): A 2 cd set including a disc of original "ritual" ambient musicK written and performed by one BARN JEHOVI, and another disc of original recordings of CROWLEY pronouncing the first and second Aethyrs (both in Enochian and English) along with many of his poems and writings.

version 2): A 6 cd set with 4 more discs of related Thelemic ritual material pronounced by other occultists if my memory is correct.

I came across them at a very popular music store in NYC (Virgin, I think) in 2001, but because of the price difference I bought the 2cd set, which I really enjoy. Anyone familiar with this material and can shed some light on who BARN JEHOVI is or what the additional material in the 6cd version is like?

Thelemic references in the Star Wars trilogy:

- Crowley was OHO of the Order of Oriental Templars (OTO) and Lucas'
original name for the Jedi Knights was the Jedi Templars.

- Crowley's secret name in the OTO was supposed to have been 'Phoenix'
and the symbol of the Rebel Alliance is a stylised phoenix.

- The windows in the Emperor's chambers at the climax of Return of the
Jedi spell 'OTO'.

- from the Book of the Law, dictated to Crowley: 'the obeah and the
wanga, the work of the wand and the work of the sword, these he shall
learn and teach.' Obeah = Obi. Wanga = Wan. Thus, Obi-Wan. And what
device is a wand one moment and a sword the next? A lightsaber, of
course; and the relevance of 'learn and teach' is obvious, since Obi-Wan
is the teacher.

- Vader's sabre is red, the colour of the sphere of Geburah, or
Severity: Obi-Wan's is blue, the colour of its opposing sphere, Chesed
or Mercy.

- Crowley makes references to 'the dwarf insane yet crafty' who is the
source of true Wisdom, obviously a reference to Yoda.

- The greatest ordeal in Crowley's A.'.A.'. system is the 'crossing of
the abyss'. One reaches the brink of a great gulf and must either
surrender everything one is and jump, or remain behind to become a
'black brother' or 'brother of the left hand path'. The 'crossing of the
abyss' is foreshadowed in A New Hope, at the point at which Luke and
Leia swing over the chasm, but is actually achieved in full in Empire
Strikes Back, at the climax of the film.

In the climax of Empire, Luke's right hand is severed at the wrist,
implying that he must take the left hand path and turn to the Dark Side,
i.e. become a 'black brother'. Faced with the choice of crossing the
Abyss or turning to the 'Left Hand Path', Luke chooses to jump, which is
the act that redeems him from a future of corruption.

- Luke is also the Horus figure, the avenger (as in Revenge of the Jedi,
the original title). In the climax of Empire, Vader (previously
identified with Set, the murderer of the father) is revealed to _be_ the
father, the dark Osiris - this being the same secret that was revealed
in the Egyptian Mysteries, namely that 'Osiris is a Black God!'

- The 'Black Brethren' are those who have 'shut themselves up', become
encased and closed off from the Universe, exactly as Vader is encased in
black armour. Their sphere on the Tree of Life is the false sphere
'da'ath', obviously the source for 'Darth'.

- Vader out of his armour proves to be a bald guy with an English
accent, uncannily reminiscent of Crowley.

Not convinced yet? Try this quote from one of Crowley's Holy Books, in
which a part of the Star Wars universe is mentioned BY NAME:

'... Thy messenger was more terrible than the Death-star.'

The messenger of the Emperor is of course Vader, who possesses (and
represents) a power far more terrible than the Death Star - the dark
side of the Force itself. As Vader himself reminds his fellow Imperials,
'The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of
the Force.'

You might recognise this scene, too...

'the chamber was corrupt; the air stank... He enveloped me with his
demon tentacles; yea, the eight fears took hold upon me.'

Garbage compactors, anyone? However, we all know what happened next:

'I slipped from the embrace as a stone from the sling of a boy of the
woodlands. I was smooth and hard as ivory; the horror gat no hold.'

Smooth and hard as ivory indeed, for Luke is wearing stormtrooper armour
in that scene.

What's with the Babalon bit?

I have read a lot on OTO and Thelema and can't get my head around the Babalon thing. I have some really cool female Thelemic friends and they would kick anyone's ass. I asked one of them what they get from being a vessel and (from my reading) a prop in the male magician's magical work, she got a bit vague. In ritual, the magick can't happen without the female energy cranking the engine into action. I'm like, why aren't you doing the magick? Being a 'sacred whore' is powerful, she said but that was really all I got. Apart from the shock value, the punk anti-authority glee, why is being a whore (on what ever metaphorical level you're jiving on) considered powerful? How is that role a positive and holistic manifestation of being a Woman? Seems limited to me.
Also, philosophically, I don't understand how it is liberating to be seen as a vessel (and in such over the top biblical language too) or as'passive creation' in the guise of Nuit. Half the time I think Crowley is laughing heartily or that he just likes having the ladies in a convenient role for him. Is it all just a knee-jerk reaction to his Christian upbringing?I'm just curious as to why this belief/philosophy appeals to modern and liberated women. This is an earnest question not some handbagging so answers really appreciated. I'm just not getting it.

Hi, I posted the following on the Theosophy Tribe on a discussion on 'good and evil'. Apparently one felt it had nothing to do with the topic. Maybe I am trippin' or maybe it's because I was born and raised in Santa Cruz, where we tend to really listen, but this kind of thing seems to be happening to 'me' a lot on Tribe. Mr. Beast is the name of Magwais latest album. They have rescently come out openly about their use of heroin in their art. If any one has this latest album on L.P. I am sure the symbol printed on side D has caught your attention. It pictures a crucifix with Jesus' arms nailed to a 'Y'. The cross of the 'T' is lower, and there is an 'M' below that. It would definitely not surprise me if there is a Crowley connection, although that is not the only reason I am posting this. I find that symbol fascinating, am wondering if anyone knows or has any idea what it stands for.

666: What's in a Number?

Are you afraid of the number 666? If you were issued an automobile license plate or a telephone number that included a string of three sixes would you ask for a different number? Do you think the number 666 is inherently evil? Do you believe any number can in and of itself be evil?

The issue of FATE magazine that you are holding in your hands right at this moment is issue number 666. The 666th word in this article is "dead." Does this make you just a little bit nervous?

If it does, you are not alone. There is a name for your condition - "Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia" - the fear of the number 666.

Everyone has at least one or two superstitions that we feel somehow comfortably obliged to observe. My father was a geologist and a high-degree Freemason. He was for the most part a very logical and scientific man. Still, he was oddly superstitious about little things like spilling salt and walking under ladders.

For a lot of people the number 666 is particularly terrifying. After all, it's the devil's number, isn't it? For the better part of 2,000 years many in the Western world have certainly thought so. What is it about these three digits that makes so many of us uncomfortable?

The Revelation of St. John

The dreaded number makes its first and only appearance in the last book of the New Testament, the Revelation of Saint John the Divine (often mistakenly called Revelations) - a book that for centuries has been interpreted by theologians as a document prophesying the terrible events that will take place at the end of the world.

Early Church fathers decided that John, the author of the Revelation, was the same John who wrote the Gospel According to John (the last of the Four Gospels). Modern experts from a wide range of religious and non-religious persuasions agree this is probably not the case. The style of the Greek writing and other obvious differences suggest the two books were penned by different individuals.

Currently, many Bible students are reassessing other theories concerning the Book of the Revelation - exactly when it was written and what it was originally trying to communicate. There is now a growing consensus among scholars that what John was actually describing (in veiled imagery understandable to his contemporary audience) was not the millennial end of the world, but an expose' of the all-too earthly details of the horrendous holocaust at the hands of the Romans that ended the second Jewish revolt in a.d. 72. This event destroyed Jerusalem and the Jewish Temple and dispersed the Jews.

For our purposes it really doesn't matter. The fact remains that the book has become a permanent fixture in the cultural consciousness of Western civilization. So let's look for a moment at what tradition informs us about John, the man Jesus called his "beloved disciple."

After the crucifixion John was arrested and banished to the tiny isle of Patmos in the Aegean Sea, a place renowned in the ancient world for two things: its barren isolation and the fact that the powerful hallucinogenic mushroom Amanita muscaria grew there in abundance. We will never know for certain whether or not John (knowingly or unknowingly) was influenced by the magic mushroom. He does, however, take care to tell the reader that he was "...in the Spirit on the Lord's day" when the vision began, and few can deny his book does indeed read like a classic shamanistic or psychedelic experience.

The vision is peopled with an awesome array of strange and terrible characters: seven angels; four horsemen; a lamb; a lion; an eagle; a dragon; locusts with tails like scorpions and heads like long-haired women; a woman clothed with the sun, with a moon under her feet; the archangel Michael; Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and abominations; and of course the Antichrist. There are wars and plagues and what sounds suspiciously like an asteroid collision with the earth. Lots of people die, and the good dead people are rewarded while the bad dead people are made to wish they were deader. It's written in such a way to make you feel pretty darned worried, even if you're confident you'll be one of the good dead people.

In chapter 13 we meet two beasts, one from out of the sea and the other from out of the earth. The first beast has seven heads and ten horns, and looks like a leopard with the feet of a bear and the mouth of a lion. To this beast is given power and authority from a great fiery dragon - the serpent called the "Devil and Satan" (a character who was introduced to us in a preceding chapter). The second beast comes out of the earth and has two horns like a lamb, and speaks like a dragon. This beast is identified by a numeric code in the last verse of chapter 13:

"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

This second beast performs all sorts of miracles that confuse most everyone about just exactly who are the good guys and who are the bad guys in this whole messy affair. The book is so cryptic that it is open to almost infinite interpretations. It is not at all clear whether or not this Beast 666 is the Antichrist, or the Antichrist's friend, or exactly what. It is all very frightening and bewildering, and biblical scholars and theologians have debated for centuries over just who's who and what it all might mean.

The Second Beast

One thing seems clear, at least on the surface: the second beast (Number 666) is somehow in cahoots with the dark forces that work their mischief to bring about the end-time events. The idea that has tantalized people for 2,000 years is the thought that this key player in the end-of-the-world drama is not some invisible angel or spiritual abstraction but a flesh-and-blood man - a man we might be able to identify by his number.

How can a number represent a man? The obvious answer is numerology - but what system of numerology - Hebrew? Greek? Latin? Aramaic? English? Nobody really knows.

John's book was written in Greek by a Jew who spoke Aramaic (the language spoken by Jesus and his disciples), and he lived in a Roman-occupied world. Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and Aramaic are all written in alphabets whose letters also represent numbers. It's anybody's guess which - if any - of the languages should be used to count the number of the beast.

The earliest Christians (who believed the world was going to end immediately) used Aramaic, Greek, and Hebrew numerology to finger as 666 the wicked Roman emperor Nero (whose monstrous reign parallels the horrors of John's vision), and many ancient and modern experts agree.

But, since the apocalypse didn't happen in the first century (at least not in the way predicted in the Revelation), people have been eagerly looking forward to the end of the world, seeking out individuals they don't like and trying to make their names add up to 666. Likely candidates have been Martin Luther, Henry VIII, Robespierre, Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington (and his alleged Illuminati double, Adam Weishaupt), Lenin, Adolf Hitler, Stalin, Chairman Mao, Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Harry S. Truman, Prince Charles, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, Osama Bin Laden, and both George Bushes - and, oh, I almost forgot, all the Popes.

Anyone Can Be 666

It takes some doing, but given enough time (and armed with the numerological tricks of the Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Latin, and English alphabets), you can make anyone's name add up to 666. But there is one thing that all these accused beasts have in common: none of them actually came right out and confessed to the world that they were the "Beast 666."

There was, however, one man in the not-too-distant past who proudly claimed the title. His name was Aleister Crowley, and during his lifetime the newspapers called him "the Wickedest Man in the World."

Chances are if you have heard anything about Aleister Crowley it probably wasn't very good. During his lifetime and for many years after his death his reputation has been that of perfectly nasty man - a black magician. Admittedly, for Victorian England he was a pretty wild character. If he were alive today, however, I'm afraid he would not be considered very frightening at all. In fact, in the last few years several excellent and very well-researched biographies of Crowley have been published that have dispelled many untrue rumors and false accusations, including some very compelling (and remarkably un-evil) reasons why he would claim the title of the Beast 666.

World's Wickedest Man

Paradoxes define the life and careers of Edward Alexander (Aleister) Crowley (1875 - 1947). He was a very strange man who often behaved like a cad and a scoundrel. Notorious as he was, however, he was never charged with, arrested for, or convicted of any crime whatsoever. Apparently his greatest "crime" was that of poor judgment. He believed that any publicity was good publicity and he happily cultivated a public reputation for being a black magician. He thought everyone would get the joke. Unfortunately, few people during his lifetime got the joke or appreciated his genius.

Be that is it may, he led quite a life. Among other distinctions, he was a world-class mountaineer, chess master, painter, poet, sportsman, novelist, literary critic, and theatrical producer. As ghostwriter for Evangeline Adams, he introduced astrology to the modern world by writing the two most popular books on the subject ever penned, Astrology: Your Place in the Sun (1927) and Astrology: Your Place Among the Stars (1930).

One of the most astonishing roles Crowley played on the stage of world events was that of secret agent. At a moment in history when the United States was seriously considering entering World War I on Germany's side, Crowley, working undercover for British Intelligence, secured a job writing for an English-language German propaganda newspaper in New York. There he wrote a series of outrageous and insanely inflammatory editorials that hailed Kaiser Wilhelm as the new Jesus Christ, advocated unrestricted submarine warfare against all of the world's civilian shipping, and boasted that it was God's will that Germany rule the world.

These wild statements did not reflect Germany's foreign policy, but the citizens of the United States did not know that. In short order Crowley's editorials were being quoted by U.S. senators and congressmen who used them as evidence that Germany was a nation gone mad. The U.S. finally joined the conflict on England's side largely due to Crowley's ingenious disinformation campaign.

At the request of his friend, naval intelligence officer Ian Fleming (creator of James Bond 007), Crowley provided Winston Churchill with valuable insights into the superstitious mindset of the leaders of Hitler's Third Reich during the Second World War. He suggested that Churchill exploit the Nazis' magical paranoia by being photographed as much as possible giving the two-fingered "V for Victory" gesture - a powerful symbol of destruction and annihilation that, according to magical tradition, is capable of defeating the perverted solar energies represented by the Nazi swastika.

Crowley's adventures and achievements, more than any dozen men of ambition and genius could hope to garner in a lifetime, are dwarfed by his monumental exploits of spiritual self-discovery. His visionary and mystical writings and his efforts to bring together the spiritual systems of East and West make him one of the most fascinating cultural and religious figures of the 20th century.

Crowley Reborn - Frequently

Crowley's reputation did not die with him in 1947. His mystique continues to such a degree that today he is the favorite past life of many individuals who are, shall we say, unbalanced. Over the years I've met quite a few individuals who have claimed with grim-faced conviction to be Aleister Crowley reborn. By the late 1970s I had logged so many encounters with "Aleister Crowley #2s" that I was contacted by famed occultist Israel Regardie (one-time secretary to Crowley) who suggested he and I pool our letters and anecdotes and publish them in a book titled Liber Nutz.

My favorite case was a gentleman in Southern California who self-published a spiral-bound book supporting his claims. Regardie forwarded me his information and suggested I go to the book-launching party at the man's home to investigate. I thought it might be fun, so I went.

This incarnation was a pleasant enough fellow in his mid-20s with a thick, dark beard that nearly obscured his entire face. His book displayed his own photograph alongside one taken of Crowley in his late 20s. Crowley's photo, however, had been altered by the addition of a thick black beard, drawn in crayon, which obscured his face so much that the images of the two men did indeed look very much alike. I resisted the temptation to comment that both pictures also looked very much like Che Guevara.

When I revealed that I was somewhat knowledgeable about the life of Aleister Crowley, the dear man became very excited. With poignant sincerity he confessed, "I don't really have any memories of my life as Aleister Crowley, but if you would be kind enough to tell me things about his life, I'm sure I'll be happy to remember."

Youthful Rebel

Let's return to Crowley himself and try to see why he identified so passionately with the Beast 666.

Crowley's father was a lay preacher of the Plymouth Brethren, a fundamentalist Protestant sect. His mother was also a devout (Crowley says "fanatical") member of the church. Together they did their best to raise their son within the strict tenets of the faith. However, young Crowley was a mischievous and headstrong lad, and his mother equated his behavior to the rebelliousness of the devil himself. In moments of aggravation she called him the "Beast 666." He loved the idea. As he grew up he delighted in identifying with the name and number as representative of all things joyously opposed to the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and sexual restrictions that he believed enslaved the human soul.

As a young man, just beginning his study of Hebrew and Christian mysticism, Crowley discovered that the number 666, rather than being a number associated with evil, was especially sacred to the life-giving powers of Sun. It was also identified with the heart chakra (or psychic center) in the human body - also called in other traditions the Christ center.

To understand why 666 is a magick number of the Sun, we must turn to the sacred teachings of the Hebrew Kabbalah where it is taught that the sphere of the Sun is the sixth emanation from the pure essence of God. To express this concept mathematically (something Kabbalists love to do) a square is composed of 36 squares (6 x 6). The numbers 1 to 36 are then arranged in a balanced way so that every row and every column add to the same number. That number is 111, and the sum of all the squares is 666.

Little Sunshine

Crowley tried to explain this in court when he testified in a 1934 lawsuit. He was asked, "Did you take to yourself the designation of 'the Beast 666'?"

"Yes."

"Do you call yourself the 'Master Therion'?"

"Yes."

"What does 'Therion' mean?"

"Great wild beast."

"Do these titles convey a fair impression of your practice and outlook on life?"

"It depends on what they mean."

"The Great Wild Beast and the Beast 666 are out of the Apocalypse?"

"It only means sunlight; 666 is the number of the sun. You can call me 'Little Sunshine.'"

Crowley believed that spiritual ages on earth are determined by humanity's evolving level of consciousness, and that around the turn of the 20th century we did indeed enter a new age. A new age naturally means the "end of the world" of the previous age. In Crowley's dramatic and colorful mind, the Book of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine provided the perfect narrative of this cosmic event.

For Crowley, the Whore of Babylon, the great Dragon, and the Beast 666 now represent perfectly wholesome spiritual characters who are instrumental in bringing about the birth of a new and eventually wonderful age.

Of course, not everyone will appreciate Crowley's point of view or his admiration of the number 666. But the 21st century is a kinder, gentler place for the memory of the wickedest man in the world. Even his native England, whose opinion of him in life was so terribly misguided, has now awakened to the fact that the man who called himself the Beast 666 was a national treasure. In 2002, the BBC conducted of poll of 30,000 Britons, asking them to vote for the person who was in their opinion the "Greatest Briton of All Time." Named number 73 in the top 100 (sandwiched between King Henry V and Robert Bruce) stands the "famous poet, author and philosopher, Aleister Crowley."

Wrong Number?

The number 666 is strange and wonderful. But what would happen if we were to discover that there had been some kind of mistake and that 666 was not the number Saint John referred to in the 17th verse of the 13th chapter of his book? Would the nature of evil change? Would satanic rock bands have to change their tattoos?

Maybe they'll have to. Recently a 1,500-year-old papyrus manuscript was examined, using new technologies to "read" the heretofore illegible script. The document is written in Greek and is the oldest known version of the Book of the Revelation. The tiny fragment confirms what many scholars and churchmen have long suspected. The text actually reads:

"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man: and his number is 616."

As Lon DuQuette says in his article, there have been countless attempts since the first century a.d. to get this name or that to add up to 666, thereby proving the subject of the inquiry to be none other than the Beast of Revelation.

If you can't do it by numerology, maybe you can do it by counting. For example, George Walker BushJr consists of three names, each of six letters: six-six-six. If "BushJr" seems awkward, use the German spelling of the last name: Busche.

Most efforts to "beast" somebody involve stretches like this.

In the novel War and Peace, the hero Pierre Bezuhov decides that Napoleon must be the Beast. He numbers the French alphabet 1 through 9, 10 through 90, and - instead of 100 through 900 as is done with the Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic alphabets - 110 through 160. By this method, he gets l'empereur Napoleon to come out to 666.

Aleister Crowley may be the only prominent individual to make a concerted effort to get his own name to enumerate to 666. He did it in a fairly straightforward manner, using Hebrew letters and numerology (gematria) and using the Hebrew heh (H) for the letter E in established cabalistic convention: A L H Y S (samekh) T (teth) H R H K R O (ayin) V L H Y. Of course he had to add a middle initial E (for Edward, his birth name), which he never did otherwise.

You can get "Bill Gates III" to be 666 by adding up the ASCII equivalents of the letters - except that III is 3.

If you number the English alphabet A = 100, B = 101, C = 102, and so on, then Hitler = 666.

Another method is to number the alphabet by multiples of six: 6, 12, 18, 24, and so on. Then you can pick up Kissinger, Rockefeller, New York, and others.

But there's not only names. The dedicated fanatic can see 666 anywhere. The old Procter & Gamble logo for example.

See the 666 in the beard? In the stars? Neither do I, but then I don't have the peculiar mentality required to see it.

During the last presidential campaign, when six days remained before election day, John Kerry's supporters carried thousands of placards with "6" on them. Any three of them together made 666, and Kerry was instantly beasted.

The number 666 really is everywhere. In Hebrew, the letter waw (or vav) carries the sound of w. It also represents the number six.

Almost every Internet address that we use every day carries the initials of the World Wide Web: WWW ... 666. Now there's the Beast!

currently i read a pretty new biography of Crowley titled Do What Thou Wilt: A Life of Aleister Crowley by Lawrence Sutin - enjoying it so far, browsed through it extensively before buying. in many ways probably the BEST bio of A.C. so far - excellently researched & very honest. Sutin isn't a Thelemite but neither does he slander or villify the man, nor does he repeat discredited anecdotes except to expose them as spurious. Where he ventures opinion & interpretation, he has the honesty not to label it authoritative fact. HIGHLY recommended. i expected no less of Sutin; he wrote an equally masterfull bio of SF writer Philip K. Dick titled Divine Invasions.

I am with 8 women. It is just before dawn and we are breaking into a church.

There’s a little chatter about whether we should be doing this or not; but for the most part we are doing it for fun.

We break in by the basement door and then make our way to the main sanctuary. It is sunrise now.

I ask one woman if we are going to sing in the choir.

Suddenly many members of the church start coming in wearing their Sunday best. I guess we are going to be part of a prayer group.

I wander around. I begin to see vendors selling their wares. Everything from clothing to toothpaste, to vitamins. EOD.

Comments: Interesting dream. Not many people breaking into a Church to sing, pray and worship.

Auspicious since tonight is the full moon. Just in time for my ceremony. I wonder if I ought to go to church with Eric? Interesting prospect, being a Thelemite and valuing free thought and free will, magick, etc.

I guess the power of prayer is similar to the intent in magick. I wonder if I am to convert Christians to Thelema? No, we thelemites don’t convert, much.

I did set my intention before sleeping, by asking my dream guide to give me a dream for my highest good.

Also interesting is the 8 women with me.

I guess you can take the Gay Boy out of Christianity, but you can’t take the Christianity out of the Gay Boy. I was Christian about 18 years and I’ve been Thelemite 22 years. I guess its no different than being a Freemason and going to Church with their family. On my Grandmother Dorothy’s side of the family Emmanuel Lamon was head of a Masonic Order in his home town of Harrison, Indiana, as was his son Elbert Lamon. Most of the Lamons were furniture makers.

Aleister Crowley rewrote the rituals of the OTO, Order of the Temple of the Orient. In Lege Judica Tace “Of the Nature of the Arcanum” he wrote about the Way of Attainment and how it was preserved by the Gnostics and Manichees, received from the greatest Magi of Egypt. Crowley writes “Our Lord Jesus Christ established it through the mouth of his Beloved Disciple. This is the True Sacrament by which ye are partakers of the very Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, not his death, but in His resurrection. By this are ye made Children of the Light, Fellows of the Holy Ghost, perfect pure, Companions of the Sangreal, illustrious Knights of the Sacrosanct Order of Kadosch. By this have ye the GNOSIS; by this are ye counted among the Dwellers of the Sanctuary.”

Somewhere in his titles he states that Horus and the Gnostic Christ are one and the same. Obviously a door is open here. I could talk all day. So before I write a book, I’ll stop this correspondence for now. Apart from my comments, what do you think of the dream?

Aleister Edward Crowley (1875-1947) - The Great Beast 666
Died of asthma and chronic bronchitis in Hastings at Netherwood House on the Ridge on December 1st 1947 where he had resided since 1945.
Arguably its most notorious and bizarre resident, Netherwood, since demolished, still belongs to the legacy of …The Wickedest Man in the World…and like its most famous guest - lives on, and is an even bigger enigma with Occultists and the curious locally and across the planet to this day.
So why Hastings?
Many tales and mysteries are bounded about just how come Crowley ended his years in Hastings and what is the curse he was rumoured to have placed on it?
Was it that, as was up until recently, Hastings was a fairly cheap place to live?
Had he visited the town many times before and was drawn by its raw charm?
Had he become a burden in London during The Blitz, being somewhat a liability during the bombing raids with his colourful antics?
Or was the magnetic force of this sacred land, a conflux of powerful ley lines, too strong to ignore?
The various so-called curses seem another fallacy of the negative and confusing misinformation surrounding the man. Why would he curse a place where he eventually found rest from the turbulence of his past days?
Aleister did not go to school until he was eight years old. Before then he was educated at home, by his father and visiting tutors until the year of 1883 when Aleister was sent to the private school, White Rock Boarding School For Young Gentleman also known as Habershon's Prep School at no. 10, Pevensey Road, St. Leonards on Sea run by a family of strict Evangelicals. He attended the school for two years where he was bullied almost daily.
Perhaps the fact that he had previously attended White Rock School or had a vengeance against the Hastings Chess Club, whom he was a member of?
Or was the mans sardonic whit and humour again misinterpreted by another in the long line of naive and negative recipients that craved his power and wished to diminish the Crowley reputation further?
Hastings and the adjoining town of St. Leonard's-On-Sea (home of the O.T.O. Shemesh lodge whom celebrate his magical legacy), have become a shrine to the intrigue and worship of Aleister Crowley and his beliefs and teachings.
Whether your affinity with Crowley is with one or all of his many attributes:
The Occult, The Religion of Thelema (and its Gnostic Mass), Sex Magick, Tarot, Drugs, Poetry, Astrology, Alchemy, Art, Mountaineering, Chess, Yoga, Philosophy, Illumination or just a curiosity of a fascinating and intriguing entity, it is hard to ignore or dismiss, that this man was just the rogue and evil charlatan that many would have you believe.
It's not obligatory to worship the man and all of his deeds and recreations, but with knowledge and understanding the perception of Crowley continues to perplex and fascinate many diverse followers across a variety of beliefs and generations.
Hastings has attracted a wealth of artists, eccentrics and occultists, (witch- Alex Sanders lived and died here in 1988), to this day, whether for the beautiful location and surroundings, the micro climate, the light, the seashore, the mixed cauldron of past and present cultures-this is a sensitive land!
Hastings has a rich and vibrant history, back to an ancient world -pre Crowley, the 1066 experience-pre Saxon, Celts and Romans…and with this history a legacy of energy, rituals and symbols.
The mysterious, and objectionable, but undeniable force behind the attraction of this area and one that I and others feel must have intrigued Crowley, is this geological force created by the meeting of ley lines and underground water currents that emerge and converge on the town and the sea. This energy and the vortex confusion it creates has manifested itself throughout its past and lives on through the present.
Crowleys doctrine in The Book Of The Law: “Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law” and his many philosophies have been the core of a cross-section of interested souls creative stimuli since their inception and Crowleys influence locally has stimulated a variety of experiments and projects, among them local band Turn Blue * whom have absorbed Crowleys, Book Of The Law and released a cd of songs entitled,'Love Is The Law', influenced by this work.
La - Chambre - Magique monthly dance nights on Hastings Pier organised by Orage are also heavily influenced by Aleister Crowleys magikal works.
Crowley did also reside in property at Harpsichord House in Hastings Old Town, where tales ascend of Indian costume frolics, the gift of a sphinx to a daughter of one of the visitors to the house, talk of strange deeds and curses are still rumoured.
Was Crowley aware of the close proximity of the Baphomet carved into the wall in The Chapel in the caves on the West Hill of Hastings?
My good friend George Hay the founder of The Science Fiction Foundation and editor of occult book, The Necronomicon, lived in Hastings old town for many years. George was an early acquaintance of L.R. Hubbard the Scientologist whom Crowley knew. Hubbard was a close friend of OTO member Jack Parsons who corresponded with Crowley at Netherwood. A regular visitor to Netherwood was Lady Frieda Harris who created the Thoth Tarot with Crowley and nursed him in his final days.
Crowley was the author of two books while in Hastings, one an anthology of poems entitled 'Olla: an anthology of sixty years of song' he self-published and the other a later published work “Magick Without Tears”.
A painting of Aleisters-'Cuboid', is featured in the film 'Fall of the House of Usher which was filmed at Netherwood, Ashburnam Place and catacombs and cellars below a demolished Grange on The Ridge, Hastings.
The films director, George Barnett became intrigued by Crowley saying he was a quiet charming man, knowing nothing of his wicked reputation at the time! Georges son Adrian still resides in Hastings.
On December 1, 1947, at the age of 71, and with his 9 year old son Ataturk and his mother Patricia 'Diedre' MacAlpine by his bed, Aleister Crowley good-spiritedly and quietly celebrated his Greater Feast.
Aleister Crowley was cremated in Brighton cemetery after Hastings Borough Council refused his burial on The Ridge. His ashes were later shipped to the USA and were buried next to a tree in Hampton, New Jersey on the property of Karl Germer (Crowley's successor to OHO).
Whatever ceremony, the latest local self-appointed king of the witches, or anyone else for that matter, performs to curb the so called Crowley Curse on Hastings, fact is people and public servants today, are and will keep on adding to, the negative rape and assault of this sacred land and to me this is the true curse that lives on now.
The Crowley enigma and spirit will continue to intrigue and fascinate.
To quote the man “…intolerance is evidence of impotence…”

in my understanding of crowley, i believe that i came across the concept that each element contains aspects of the others (ie: airy part of water, earthy part of fire, etc). is this an original idea, coming directly from crowley, or did it originate elsewhere? i remember this coming up in the discussion of tarot. if i'm not mistaken, i read it in his book of thoth (which i read about 10+ years ago). could someone please refresh my memory on this topic?

Just read a solid review about this theater company out of Seattle doing a full rock opera version of the Rite of Luna. Great website on it too.

Crowley and Dunes!!

I've dreamt of Crowley as a silhouette against a backdrop of sand dunes where he uttered to me "Take no more of these strange drugs while I am in you" Then a silver camel galloped me to an oasis.
