you know the ancient city of Hermopolis in Egypt
may have been named after the original grandfather of Alchemy
Hermes Tresmegistus, and the Greeks linked Hermes with Thoth
and originally in ancient times it was the place of Creation where the
Sun Child Ra was born. Thoth led a pantheon of 8 snake and frog
gods and goddessses who formed the City of 8 and they were
traveling to the 8th dimension, representing the 8 seasonal shifts of the year.

Re: Thoth's Ogdoad of Eight
Fri, July 31, 2009 - 7:20 PMA lot of the stuff that comes to mind is probably true enough for me and mostly false in general, so I guess I have profited most from looking at 8 through these lenses:
8=7+1
8=Hod, connencted to sol via ATU XV, etc.
Libel AL, Ch. II
Hope that helps.

Sat, August 1, 2009 - 10:08 AMthanks for the thoughts.
there are some profound examples of
the octagon in architecture as it supports
the circle and the dome.
most churches feature octagons
in their steeples, belltowers, and such things.

Re: Thoth's Ogdoad of Eight
Mon, August 3, 2009 - 2:17 AMbrother Aarotrot...no one can help you on your quest for the 'wisdom of the eight'.....the path/journey is very individual for the initiate. You may have already come across certain information which would have led to greater insight and synchronicity. Research will undoubtedly present you with volumes of text; however pasting words concerning forces of such primeval chaos is not necessary. Yes, the number eight carries an abundant harmony and significance. Yet, so do all numbers. Your wisdom is progressing in tune with your own connectivity and experience. Slow down, bask in that which brought light on this great study of universal wisdom.
blessed be,

Re: Thoth's Ogdoad of Eight
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 3:52 AM8 is a number with an endless number of amazing powerful connections....
just like all the other numbers 1-10
I suggest you get / look at a book called....
A Beginners Guide to Constructing the Universe...
I have always said I cannot recommend this book too highly.
It covers each number from 1-10 and gives probably the single greatest overview of all the powerful meanings
and associations that come from and are related to that number.
Cheers. -

Thu, August 20, 2009 - 11:48 AMJust rediscovered something that may be of interest here:
Cheth = 8, (777, Table VI, Col. CLXXV)
"Cheth" spelled out is Cheth-Yod-Tau, 8+10+400 = 418, (777, Table I, Col. II) -

Of even greater interest to me is that Crowley's system interpreted 418 (Cheth spelled fully in numerical equivalents) as "The Great Work Accomplished," thus making it a key number in his magickal system.
And though Crowley may not have been aware of this, the number 8 serves in the Judeo-Christian Bible as a symbol of rebirth and renewal, particularly the spiritual rebirth called in the New Testament Greek "the birth from above" whereby "ye might be partakers of the divine nature." (2Peter 1:4) "And Jesus said unto him, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a man be born again (Gk. gennethu anothen = born from above ' John 3:4) he cannot see the kingdom of God."
And if we look into The Book of the Law, we find 1:46--"Nothing is a secret key of this law. Sixty-one the Jews call it; I call it eight, eighty, four hundred & eighteen." This is easily explained as the Hebrew word for 'nothing" is "NIA", literally "not" or "naught". Then among the words that add to eight we find HBA = To will or intend, BHA = Desired, beloved, and also HAB = The door or threshold. The words adding to eighty suggest the nature of that will and desire, viz. MIS = Union, DOSEY - Foundation, and SK = Throne. (Note that the Hebrew words above, though transliterated into the Roman alphabet are written right to left in the Hebrew fashion, so the word for "Foundation" as an example, spelled left to right as in English would become the familiar "Yesod", the ninth Sephira..)
Then 418 gives us the "Word of the Aeon, Makashanah" and also "Abrahadabra" which also means "The Great Work Accomplished." And the method is given in Crowley's frequent admonitions to "Invoke often:" and "Inflame thyself with prayer." Such is the nature of the will to embrace all events and unite with each to raise our consciousness to the threshold of the Sanctuary of the Gnosis, to enter within and therein to be enthroned as conquerors of maya. Thus are we to accomplish our true wills, the Great Work, the Summum Bonum, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness"
So that is the scoop on number 8 from my possibly demented perspective. Well it makes sense to me, though I'm not sure that anyone else will find it so.

This coincides with astrology too, as Scorpio is the 8th sign/house, and the sign/house of death and rebirth.

see Liber Arcanorum for more on 'cheth' as a hieroglyph for the great work. serious students may find the letters hidden in the trim above the canopy on "the chariot" card in the book of thoth enlightening.
as an aside, i think it's worth mentioning that the word of the aeon is Abrahadabra - Makhashana is only the word of the Aeon on Hecate's plane. see Liber 418, 26th Aethyr.

Wowzers! Thanks for sharing that observation! It seems to say "abracadabra" instead of "abrahadabra" – hoping someone cn shed more light on the abrahadabra/abracadabra connection, as I seem to recall that there was something to this...
